by Lou Hood
Lou Hood discusses the endless value of education for those who need it most, while outlining the incredible strength that empowered and globally-minded youth have to attacking the disparities in education that exist today. Lou shares the beautiful story of we(e)press and the details of their first publication, bringing together 24 international artists on the same project with one goal, promoting education for all. Lou is the founder of we(e)press, a publisher of globally-themed children’s books that can be found in libraries and homes across Canada and around the world. What sets we(e)press apart from other publishers, however, is the fact that their books are published royalty free, with all proceeds funding education and literacy projects in sub-Saharan Africa. Lou’s first book Around the World in the Blink of an Eye: A Truly Global Picture Book features artwork from over 24 artists from 24 different time zones, as the reader literally moves around the world in the blink of an eye.

An avid traveler, Lou is acutely aware of the discrepancies in the quality of life from one region of the world to the next. A firm believer in education being at the root of a brighter future, Lou is a vocal proponent of education projects that serve as a “hand up” to less developed nations. She is committed to doing her part towards achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, particularly universal primary education by 2015–a serious game changer for the wellbeing and future of all mankind.

In her free time, Lou is a mother and a communications specialist living in Ottawa, Canada. She is a marketing graduate from Concordia University’s Commerce program, and holds a MBA from the University of British Columbia; her 20 year professional career has spanned all aspects of marketing, advertising and communications.

Both Lou and we(e)press are working on a number of exciting initiatives designed to challenge young people to bring the necessary change needed to the areas of the world that need it the most.
