Ed joined Waterloo in 1976 after completing his Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Ph.D., from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The former chair of the Department of Systems Design Engineering, Dr. Jernigan is a dedicated teacher who has been recognized with both the University of Waterloo’s Distinguished Teacher Award and the Teaching Excellence Award by the Faculty of Engineering.

Dr. Jernigan has been interested in biomedical applications in Systems Design Engineering throughout his career, primarily in the application of vision and image processing systems to medical image analysis, interpretation and diagnosis. He has also been involved with projects in eye movement analysis for vision diagnostics, image enhancement for low vision patients, artificial vision systems and vision models. His recent projects include wavelet based medical image enhancement and compression, and the development of a content based image archiving and retrieval system for medical image data bases. He collaborates with researchers in optometry and with industry. He founded the Vision and Image Processing research group in the Department of Systems Design Engineering in 1980.

Since 1984 Ed has served as the Program Director for the Shad Valley summer enrichment program, living in residence with 48 high school students during the month of July. In 2004 he created Waterloo Unlimited, a university-wide enrichment program for high school students of exceptional potential, which he continues to direct.

Ari is in his fourth year of Media, Information and Technoculture at UWO. He also works with the Apple Campus Representative program. As a user experience designer, Ari uses technology to unite communities in making positive change. Along with his involvement in TEDxUWO, Ari is responsible for student outreach for TEDxToronto, where he has been involved in the community since its inauguration.

TED has been the catalyst driving Ari from being a passive student to being an active leader in his community. “TED allows some of the greatest critical thinkers of today to get together and create some really powerful new ideas. You don’t have to be on the TED stage to change the world; be a part of the conversation and don’t forget to have fun with it!”

Finishing his third year at UWO, Austin is working towards a degree in Management and Organizational Studies with a Specialization in Finance and Administration and a Minor in Economics. After actually learning how to say his degree, he decided he should utilize both his talents and experience in a way that could benefit his community. Although heavily involved with extra-curriculars, including student council and his fraternity Sigma Chi, Austin is always looking to implement his abilities and explore new environments.

Discovering TED talks over three years ago by a friend, he fell in love with the concept – he sees the real world applications of TED talks and strongly believes more people should be exposed to them. Austin is more than thrilled to be part of the TEDxUWO team to help bring something he loves so close to home.

Marty will be completing a degree in Psychology this year at UWO. Since high school, Marty has been passionate about intercultural engagement, an interest which only expanded after an inspiring summer as an intern in Jerusalem, where he participated in multinational interfaith dialogue projects in the Middle East. As a founder of the Tzedaka-Sadaqah Project, Marty has been working to build bridges of trust and communication between individuals of different backgrounds through hands-on charity work. He has extensive experience in encounter based education within Canada and hopes to continue building on this on an international level as a board member of the Young Leadership Council of the International Council of Christians and Jews (ICCJ).

Excited to be part of TEDxUWO, Marty believes that positive change starts with innovative ideas and that the TEDx platform is an amazing way to spread great ideas.

An avid TED follower, Dylan has always appreciated an enlightening idea, as well as a decent joke. So, what did the audience member of TEDxUWO say about the event? He was delighTED!

After completing a 12 month internship at Agriculture Canada in May 2009, Robert began fundraising for an international trade and development mission to China and Malaysia in August. Now a fifth year student pursuing an Honours Specialization in Physiology and Pharmacology, Robert’s experiences overseas reaffirmed his commitment to get further involved with on-campus leadership development programs, and prompted him to change career paths towards international business.

Robert has seized the opportunity to help bring an internationally reputable event to London because “This is a rare chance for students to experience an agenda packed with amazing and inspiring speakers in such a short period of time. I hope that everyone takes this opportunity to be inspired.”

Samara came to us from Queen’s University and is now in her second year pursuing a major in Political Science and minor in Global Studies at Huron University College. She loves to travel, eat the food of the world, and occasionally attempts to cook it in her own kitchen. Since high school, Samara has been instilled with the idea that one individual can truly make a difference, seeing this first hand as the president of her high school’s social justice club, then collaborating with like-minded students at Queen’s University to create a grassroots zero cost initiative, and could not wait to join the TEDxUWO team when the opportunity was presented to her.

To Samara, TED is not only “ideas worth spreading”; a TED talk makes you want to go do something in the world, inspire others, and go beyond your boundaries.
